Two of the NHL’s Original Six do battle, as the New York Rangers do battle with the Montreal Canadiens. The Rangers have been firing on all cylinders, winning eight of the last nine games. For that reason, New York is the first of our expert NHL picks tonight. Let’s take a look at some more numbers to see why we’re heading in this direction.
NHL Betting Line: Rangers at Canadiens
Once again, the Rangers are the underdog – but that hasn’t
seemed to matter. This is a team that has won each of its last eight games on
the road and now finds itself just four points from the playoffs. It’s a long
reach from where New York was, just a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, the Rangers
are clearly the team with all the momentum right now.
Rangers Betting Line
Despite missing rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers
find themselves in the midst of the playoff hunt. With three games in hand on
the Columbus Blue Jackets, a few wins would position New York nicely going down
the final stretch of the season. The team signed Chris Kreider to a long-term
deal, and now this team doesn’t have to worry about where one of their best
players will be playing.
Alexandar Georgiev wound up getting the last start for the
Rangers, and he’ll do so once again tonight. Georgiev wasn’t dealt at the
deadline, making that a fine no-call on the part of New York, which needs him
desperately in the playoff hunt. Over the last five starts, Georgiev has not
allowed more than three goals and also holds a respectable 3-2 record.
Canadiens Betting Line
The Canadiens have greatly underperformed this season, and it’s
not like a matchup with the Rangers is going to make things any better. There’s
no way that Montreal is heading to the playoffs, barring some type of
late-season miracle which no one is really expecting.
Carey Price will man the pipes for the Canadiens, and that’s
about the best thing they have going for them. While Price does have the name
cache, he has allowed three goals or more in seven of his last eight games. The
Rangers will clearly be taking on the lesser-version of one of the NHL’s
formerly-best goaltenders.
Expert NHL Pick: Rangers Money Line (+117)
Typically, Madison Square Garden is one of the best NHL’s best
home venues. However, this young Rangers team is getting it done wherever they
play. Look for them to continue this hot streak and put another one in the win
column.
New Jersey Devils at San Jose Sharks
NJ | Money Line: +118 |
Puck Line (+1.5): -220

SJ | Money Line: -137 | Puck Line (-1.5): +180
Total: 6 Goals | O: -106 | U: -115

SAP Center – San Jose, CA
A pair of teams at the bottom of the heap do battle, as the New Jersey Devils travel to face the San Jose Sharks. The Devils are clearly the better team at the moment, winning each of the last three games, and four of the last five. For that reason, New Jersey is the second of our expert NHL picks. Let’s dive into the numbers to see why another road team will take the cake.
NHL Betting Line: Devils at Sharks
This is another tri-state area team getting the benefit of the
doubt, playing against an opponent that is faltering. The Sharks have failed to
win a game in each of their last five contests while the Devils are actually
playing some decent hockey at the moment. New Jersey is a winner in each of the
last three games, and also in four of the last five.
Devils Betting Form
Perhaps the biggest caveat for betting on the Devils is rolling
on the back of goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood. It’s not like New Jersey’s
offense will get it done, but the young backstop has been absolutely fantastic
since the All-Star break concluded. In fact. The Devils have posted a very
respectable 8-2-4 record in those 14 games.
Sharks Betting Form
Luckily for the Sharks, Logan Couture returned to the lineup
last game for the first time in a while. This is a team that can use any type
of good news, losing each of the last five games. One of those five losses came
against the Devils last week in New Jersey – a tough 2-1 loss.
This is probably a chance for Aaron Dell to finally get a crack
at the Devils. In that previous meeting last week, it was Martin Jones getting
the start. Dell hasn’t fared much better, though, allowing three goals or more
in all but one of his last six starts. While New Jersey’s offense isn’t great,
neither is Dell. This is a great opportunity for the Devils to make some noise
tonight.
Expert NHL Pick: Devils Money Line (+118)
At the end of the day, it usually comes down to goaltending.
Blackwood is the much better of the two, and that’ll show when the game is all
said and done. Look for the Devils to keep this mini-streak rolling and come
out victorious tonight.
