Both teams had high expectations coming into the 2019 season but lost each of their Week 1 contests. With a Monday night matchup loaded with storylines, you better find a good spot in front of the TV set for this one. After all, we’ve got some of the game’s most polarizing figures on one field.
Odds Analysis: Browns at Jets
The opening line of Browns -1 got a massive increase up to -6 when the Jets had their world come crumbling down earlier this week. We’ll get to more of that later, but 78 percent of public bets/76 percent of money wagered has Cleveland backing. In addition, 56 percent of public bets/64 percent of money wagered is on the total going over.
Browns Betting Form
The Browns have a great opportunity here to avoid an 0-2 start. A big mismatch to look out for in this game is WR Odell Beckham Jr. against Jets’ outside corners Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts. QB Baker Mayfield had a tough time against a ferocious Titans’ pass rush in Week 1 but things should be easier this time around. Look for Mayfield to hit Beckham for a few deep bombs, giving the volatile wideout something to boast about in his old stomping grounds.
Cleveland’s defense should have a more-inspired performance this time around. After getting shellacked in the opener, you have to think the guys upfront on the defensive line will create some havoc. New York’s offensive line has plenty of issues, and they’re still working out a few kinks with a new signal-caller at the helm.
Jets Betting Form
Wow. How quickly it all went downhill for the Jets in the past week. QB Sam Darnold was kissing around and got mono, while WR Quincy Enunwa will miss the rest of the season and DT Quinnen Williams and LB C.J. Mosley will miss this game. That Jets’ defense is really going to miss the latter two, so expect the Browns to get their running game going a bit more.
It’s going to be an uphill battle for the Jets, but taking this game slowly is what could give them a chance. Backup QB Trevor Siemian is not a bad game-manager, but that’s all we’re really asking of him. Siemian has a career 13-13 record as a starter, and that’s about par for the course with a player like this.
Cleveland’s defense got absolutely shredded by Derrick Henry in Week 1, so we should expect to see a heavy dose of Le’Veon Bell and New York’s running game. In fact, the Browns’ defense had the most missed tackles in 2018, and Henry’s Week-1 effort didn’t help things further.
Betting Pick: Under 45
All in all, we’re probably looking at a slow-moving slugfest to wrap up the Week 2 slate. There are a lot of key players dinged up and that could certainly impede the movement of the offenses, even with the extra day to heal. Look for the Browns to ultimately get the win, probably by a little more than a touchdown.
