The PGA FedEx Cup Playoffs begin with The Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, New Jersey. If you’re around the television this weekend, make sure you check out this event because you’ll see some excellent scenery from the nearby Lower Manhattan skyline.
In this week’s contest, be sure to look out for the specialists in these categories:
Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green (SGT2G)
Ball Striking
Par-4 Scoring Average (Par-4 Scoring)
Bogey Avoidance (Bog Avoid)
Most sports betting sites have made Jon Rahm the favorite with Caesars Sportsbook pricing him at +1000. After that, Rahm is followed by a close grouping of Jordan Spieth (+1600), Dustin Johnson (+1800), and Collin Morikawa (+1800).
In this article, I will break down some of these golfers, and even some others that could have a chance to cash in on plus-money odds. Without further ado, let’s check in on my best 2021 Northern Trust picks for this weekend.
2021 Northern Trust Open Picks
Outright Winner Pick
Collin Morikawa – (+1800)
Morikawa is looking good coming into The Northern Trust, ranking first Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green, and second in both Ball Striking and Par-4 Scoring. In his last 10 outings, Morikawa has posted a win, a second-place finish, and four other Top-10 finishes. One thing I love about this guy is that when he gets the lead, he rarely relinquishes it. Morikawa would be a nice bet at some point over the weekend if you see he is ahead of the pack.
Top 10 Finish Picks
Jon Rahm – (+110)
As the overall favorite, we have to keep an eye on Rahm. In his last five outings, Rahm has posted a win and three other Top-10 finishes. The only misnomer in that set was the MC at the Memorial Tournament, where he was leading by six strokes. If you were living under a rock, that was the one where Rahm had the positive COVID test during the round. Good thing that lapse in science didn’t ruin Rahm’s season because the man is absolutely cruising at the moment. Rahm has very strong ranks in Ball Striking (1st), SGT2G (2nd), Bog Avoid (10th), and Par-4 Scoring (20th).
Daniel Berger – (+300)
Berger also has very strong ranks in the categories we’re looking for: Bog Avoid (1st), Par-4 Scoring (6th), Ball Striking (10th), and SGT2G (20th). In his last three outings, Berger has been lights-out with three Top-10 finishes. He does have some familiarity with Liberty National Golf Course, and that could be a big difference compared to his counterparts.
Sleeper Pick
Branden Grace – (+8000)
Grace is back in good form with a second-place finish at the Wyndham Championship last weekend. It also wasn’t too long ago that he finished seventh at the U.S. Open. Liberty National Golf Course has its own set of challenges, just like others, but Grace’s navigation of the course could come into play here. This is a course that can pick up in wind later in the day, and he is one of the best in those conditions.
