The Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees to close out MLB’s Opening Week tonight. This will be featured as a standalone game on Sunday Night Baseball.
After two back and forth games, the Yankees remain unscathed while the Red Sox are looking for their first win of the 2022 MLB season. Here are the odds, game time, starting pitchers and a prediction for the Sunday Night Baseball game.

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction
A bullpen game isn’t really the thing that Boston needs right now, but it probably is the thing that the Red Sox are going to get on Sunday night. Tanner Houck made it through the fifth inning in just one of his 13 starts last season, but he did a pretty good job in his four appearances (two starts) against the Yankees in 2021. The right-hander tallied a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings to go along with 16 strikeouts.
And when the Yankees do get to the Red Sox bullpen, that’s where I see the advantage here. The Bronx Bombers have picked up five of their 10 runs in the two come-from-behind wins in this series off of Boston relievers. The top of the Yankees batting order also looks good with homers in back-to-back games from Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton.
Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery’s splits are another reason I like the Yankees to complete the sweep. He has better career numbers, both at home (3.64 ERA) and at night (3.69 ERA) in his career, which is enough for me to take the Yankees moneyline (-140).
Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction Over/Under
Total bettors were disappointed Saturday, as the teams held each other in check and didn’t allow any runs to score after the sixth inning. But when the wind is blowing out in the Bronx, and that looks to be the case tonight, runs usually follow.
I think these conditions lend themselves to several extra-base hits, and I don’t expect the bullpens to be quite as effective on Sunday. I’m backing over 9 runs at +105.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Prop Bet
It seems a bit counterintuitive, but I like the play on a team to score first and then lose the game. The Red Sox have scored first and lost in both of the first two games in this series, and the weather conditions should lend themselves to plenty of offense from both sides tonight. If that’s the case, that should make it manageable for the trailing team to cancel out an early run and come from behind to pull out a victory.
The Yankees’ bullpen also seems to have a hold on Boston’s hitters right now, as the Red Sox have scored just two runs off New York’s relievers and one was in extra innings with a free runner on second base. If Montgomery gives up an early run, there’s going to be a lot of value in the Yankees coming from behind to win the game. I’m playing the team that scores first to lose at +190, available at BetMGM.
