After an entertaining 2021 NFL Draft, we now know where certain players have landed and the impact they can potentially have. This makes it easier to determine our picks to win various NFL awards, and this can also help in our NFL futures bets. Let’s take a look at the NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year Odds and see who the most profitable target could be.
2021 NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year Odds Analysis
Micah Parsons (+500) wasn’t the first defensive player taken in the 2021 draft, but he is leading these odds by a wide margin, according to William Hill. Coming out of Penn State, Parsons will look to anchor a Dallas defense that desperately needs it. Sean Lee and Kyle Vanden Bosch have both been previously derailed by injuries, so the hope is that Parsons can sure up that side of the football.
It was certainly head-scratching to see Jaycee Horn and Pat Surtain II listed all the way down on this list. After all, they were the first two defensive players taken in the draft and will be thrown right in the fire.
Jaelan Phillips didn’t have to go too far from the University of Miami to the Miami Dolphins. He, and along with Kwity Paye, are both EDGE rushers with odds listed at +900. Paye will be playing for the Indianapolis Colts, so the two of them will both be on successful teams with a chance to thrive in a winning system.
Key Trends For NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year
Similar to the NFL Defensive Player of The Year, a defensive lineman has won the award most over the past 10 years.
When looking at the past winners of this award, we can expect most of these guys to be in the NFL Hall of Fame someday. The last three winners (Chase Young, Nick Bosa, Darius Leonard) were all guys that aren’t members of the secondary, so perhaps it’s wise to look for a player in the front seven.
Over the last 10 years, the total breakdown by position has been:
- Defensive Line: 5
- Linebacker: 3
- Secondary: 2
Pretty much all of the past DROY winners in the last 10 years are still making an impact in the NFL to this day. Luke Kuechly, who won the award back in 2012, was forced to retire from the league due to injuries.
Expert Pick To Win NFL DROY Award 2021
Micah Parsons (+500)
In some of these other contests, I may take a bigger leap of faith. However, I’ll be playing it safe with Parsons here. This is a guy that had a very successful college career, and his chances of winning this award grow significantly by playing on a team like the Dallas Cowboys. As we all know, playing for the Cowboys has its perks, and playing about 30-40% of your schedule on primetime games helps. Look for Parsons to give Dallas a huge boost on defense en route to winning this award.
