The Green Bay Packers had an eventful offseason. After trading away Davante Adams and letting Marquez Valdes-Scantling walk, Green Bay has a gigantic need at the wide receiver position. That’s something that could be addressed during the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Packers will likely have a spotlight on them in the first round as the organization has famously turned down the opportunity to draft a wide receiver in the first round to help out QB Aaron Rodgers and the passing game. Will 2022 finally be the year that Green Bay selects a wideout with with its first pick?
Let’s take a look at the Packers’ draft targets in the first round along with projected betting odds for their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
NFL Draft Odds for Packers #1 Pick
The Packers have two first-round draft picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, at No. 22 and No. 28. Many are projecting Green Bay to use their draft assets to move up in the first round to get their top target, and wide receiver is clearly the Packers’ top area of need, given the reasons above.
While right tackle is another position the Packers have vacant that will need to be filled, let’s take a look at the odds and best bets for the Packers #1 pick in the 2022 draft.
Packers First Pick 2022 Best Bets
Packers First Pick Best Bet: Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State (+125)
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur stated the obvious when he said the team needs to get faster at wide receiver. There is very little speed in the wide receiver room and the team currently doesn’t have a true deep threat. Drafting Chris Olave out of Ohio State would solve this issue.
While some mock drafts believe Olave will fall to the 22nd pick, it’s more likely that the Packers trade up in the 15-18 range to draft Olave with their first pick.
Packers First Pick Best Bet: Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas (+130)
It appears Treylon Burks is the last first-round wide receiver talent in the 2022 NFL Draft. So, if the Packers stay where they are instead of trading up, Burks is likely the choice at No. 22.
Burks is a big-bodied receiver who runs angry after the catch. He is also from a small town in Arkansas, and the Packers organization always loves a player with humble roots. The issue with him is he’s a slot receiver who looks like an outside guy. He also doesn’t possess the speed the Packers lack.
However, if I know anything about Green Bay, they love to draft players early and make them switch positions, so drafting a slot receiver and making him play outside is a strong possibility here.
Packers First Pick Best Bet: Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa (+160)
You may not know the name Trevor Penning, but you ought to. He is a mean, old-school mentality offensive lineman who can be a Day 1 starter in the NFL. Penning would give the Packers that nastiness on the offensive line that is currently missing. It would also lock down the right side of the offensive line after a season that had plenty of inconsistencies there.
If the Packers decide to pass on wide receiver with their first pick, Penning at offensive tackle will likely be their choice.
