The second tournament of the Primera Division de Mexico, also known as Liga MX, is now taking place. The Apertura runs from July to December while the current Clausura features matches from January to May. There are 18 teams in the main domestic league in Mexico and each competition lead to playoffs and two champions each season. It is matchday 7 of 17 this weekend.
Atlas FC are the current Apertua (opening) champions. They finished second in the regular season and then won the playoffs called liguilla which is the ‘little league’ in Spanish. Pachucha are the current leaders of the Clausara (closing) but have played one more match than the next eight teams in the standings. We are looking at three fixtures for our Liga MX picks this week.
CD Guadalajara vs Puebla – 8 pm, Saturday
Bet | Odds |
Guadalajara to win | -180 |
Draw | +205 |
Puebla to win | +220 |
Liga MX Pick – Puebla to beat CD Guadalajara at (+220) with PointsBet
This brings together the Guadalajara who are seven places and seven points behind the Puebla after six matches. Guadalajara finished 10th in the Apertura while Puebla were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the Apertura liguilla. The hosts won just two points more than their opponents during the regular Apertura season.
Guadalajara won just three of eight fixtures at home in the opening tournament, scoring nine goals but conceding 10. Puebla won the same number of road trips from as many matches, producing a goal difference of nil. They have won their two away fixtures in the Clausara played to date and can add to that tally with three points at the Akron Stadium at the weekend.
Pumas UNAM vs Club América – 10 pm, Saturday
Bet | Odds |
Pumas to win | +150 |
Draw | +220 |
Club América to win | +165 |
Liga MX Pick – Pumas UNAM to beat Club America at (+150) with PointsBet
This fixture looks to be one of the home bankers of the weekend because Pumas have made a much better start to the current competition than their opponents. The hosts have won six more points than Club America after six matches for each team. Pumas have a better goal difference of 11 which averages at almost two goals per match.
Club America were top of the table in the Apertura at the end of last year. They accumulated 14 more points than Pumas and produced a 17 goal better goal difference during the regular season. However, Pumas beat them 3-1 during the playoffs as the visiting team. They can build on that result with a home win in this meeting.
Cruz Azul vs Santos Laguna – 8 pm, Sunday
Bet | Odds |
Cruz Azul to win | -105 |
Draw | +225 |
Santos laguna to win | +270 |
Liga MX Pick – Cruz Azul to beat Santos Laguna at (+150) with PointsBet
The final fixture of the matchday at 01.00 on Monday has the potential to produce another home win because it looks like an unevenly matched contest. Cruz Azul are 13 places and 11 points ahead of the visiting team in this fixture. In fact, Santos Laguna are the bottom club in the current standings and the only one of 18 teams to have not won a match in the Clausara so far. Cruz Azul are third in the table after two wins from three fixtures at their famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
