One of the toughest parts about MLS betting is that it’s a league of forced parity. Unlike England or Germany, a club can’t just spend its way to the top in the league. Thanks to a salary cap like in other US sports leagues, anyone can truly beat anyone in this league. That’s just not true in other leagues, as you’re only going to see Watford best Manchester City once in 25 occasions.
But here, parity exists, which means form is more important than ever. And that’s one of the best parts about soccer: because there are so many of the same players in every match, a team that tends to do one thing regularly will usually keep doing that one thing. A great example is the Philadelphia Union, who have now gone 337 minutes without allowing a goal on their home turf. That’s a span of nearly four matches, including last week, and it gives a clue as to how to bet their matches when they’re on the pitch.

MLS Picks, Parlays and Predictions This Weekend
It’s still rather early in the MLS season, but trends are starting to establish themselves. Here are my MLS picks and best value plays for April 23-24, along with a correct score bet of the week.
Philadelphia Union to Win to Nil (+170) vs. CF Montreal, Saturday, April 23, 3 p.m. EST, available at Unibet
Here’s why I brought up the Philadelphia Union earlier. Philadelphia has been lights out at home this season. The Union gave up a goal to Minnesota United in their first home match of the year, but since then, they haven’t allowed another one. The Union boast a top-flight keeper in Jamaican national team keeper Andre Blake, and the defense has played with confidence over its past three matches.
CF Montreal has played well on the road this season, but they have struggled to score against better opponents. Orlando City, Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna all blanked Montreal when the Impact came to them, and I think the Union can do the same this weekend. Philadelphia has given up just four goals all season, and after a poor defensive showing at Toronto, I think the Union bounce back in front of their home fans with a shutout.
Seattle Sounders (+175) vs. San Jose Earthquakes, Saturday, April 23, 10 p.m. EST, available at Unibet
Right now is an awful time to face the Seattle Sounders, who enter this game in a foul mood after taking a 1-0 schedule loss at home to Inter Miami. The Sounders’ struggles in the early part of the season have one explanation: the Sounders have thrown everything into trying to become the first American side to win the CONCACAF Champions League, which led them to throw out a B side against Miami. They’re rested now and should be ready to go against San Jose, which does not have a win in MLS competition this season.
Plus, the Earthquakes have a horrible history against the Sounders at their home stadium. Since opening PayPal Park in 2015, the Quakes are 0-4-4 against Seattle in San Jose and have lost three of the past four meetings. San Jose has just one win against Seattle in the teams’ past 16 MLS meetings and that doesn’t appear likely to change here. With the Sounders holding the Miami loss fresh in their minds, look for them to take their frustrations out on the Quakes this weekend.
Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls Over 2.5 Goals (+100), Sunday, April 24, 3:30 p.m. EST, available at Unibet
The past four meetings between these teams have seen three or more goals fly into the net, and Orlando City seems to be coming into its own on the attack. Ercan Kara has scored in Orlando’s past two matches and seems to be developing a real partnership with assist man Facundo Torres, which has led the Lions to score five goals in their past three matches.
The Red Bulls have been all over the net in their past few matches, but simply haven’t been able to hit the target more than once per match. A team that puts up 20 shots in a match is eventually going to break through, and Orlando’s defense has been a tad suspect as of late, giving up four goals to Los Angeles FC at home. I think these teams can find three between them on Sunday.
Minnesota United vs. Chicago Fire Correct Score 1-0 (+650), Saturday, April 23, 5 p.m. EST, available at Unibet
Goals are simply not happening when Chicago steps on the pitch, as the Fire have only scored five goals all year while conceding three. Minnesota hasn’t seen many goals this year either; the Loons have eight to their name and have scored exactly once in five of their seven MLS matches this season. Only Austin was able to shut Minnesota out, which gives the Loons great value to find the net once and only once.
Chicago has failed to score in three consecutive matches and has also failed to score in two of its three matches away from Soldier Field this season, That doesn’t bode well against a stiff Minnesota defense and is why I’m betting on a correct score of 1-0 in a United win.
