MLB Predictions Today With Odds, Schedule, Probable Pitchers for April 20

Without a doubt, one of the worst feelings in baseball is when you’re one out away from cashing a bet and an error extends the inning to give the team at bat one more chance to ruin your day. That was exactly my situation yesterday, as my bet on the First Five Under in the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals game looked to be on cruise control after Madison Bumgarner had pitched the Diamondbacks to a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. With a pop-up heading to second base, this wager seemed like one of the easiest cashes I’ve had in a while.

And then the winds at Nationals Park got involved, causing Ketel Marte to lose sight of the ball — allowing it to drop in for a hit and giving the Nats another chance to score. Of course, that’s exactly what happened — Washington got back-to-back hits to take a 2-1 lead and put my under bet in trouble.

MLB Predictions Today and Best Bets

In addition to the Diamondback vs. Nationals best bet win from yesterday, we also cashed Tuesday’s three-leg Parlay of the Day. We’ll try to keep that going today with my MLB predictions and best bets for April 20.

MLB Best Bet April 20: Cleveland Guardians First Five (-155) vs. Chicago White Sox, Game 1, 2:10 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM

When he’s healthy, Indians ace Shane Bieber has been one of the most reliable starters in the game. And he’s off to a great start in 2022, holding the Kansas City Royals to just one unearned run in 4.2 innings and blanking the Reds through five innings before Cleveland left him in one inning too long. But we’re only looking at the first five innings for this play, and Bieber hasn’t given up an earned run yet in the first five innings this season.

On the rubber for the White Sox is Dallas Keuchel, who hasn’t had a lot of success against the Guardians. In 2021, Keuchel faced Cleveland on three occasions and each time he gave up at least three runs before exiting. Over 16.2 innings against the Guardians a season ago, Keuchel conceded 12 runs, all of them earned. With Cleveland averaging more than three runs in the first five innings and Bieber on the slab, I like the Guardians at home as one of my best bets for April 20.

MLB Best Bet April 20: Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros Under 8.5 (+100), 6:40 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM

Shohei Ohtani hasn’t looked great this season on the mound, but one bad start is nothing to panic over after what he did a year ago. The Astros have scored just 41 runs in 11 games this season and are only getting on base at a .297 clip, which says they’re not getting enough guys on to put up huge numbers.

In general, Houston has been winning games because its bullpen has provided solid relief in the early going. The Astros have an ERA of just 2.98 out of the pen (contrasted with a 3.55 ERA for the pitching staff as a whole), so if teams don’t crack the Astros’ starters (in this case, Jake Odorizzi), they’re probably not going to have a lot of success in that game.

And the Angels have only managed to score 13 runs in five games against Houston this season. They bunched six of those into one game in which they trailed by 10 runs and eventually lost 13-6. This all says to me that the under 8.5 runs is a solid play today.

MLB Best Bet April 20: Seattle Mariners (-150) vs. Texas Rangers, 9:40 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM

The Mariners have one goal in this game — get into the Rangers’ bullpen. Seattle already has the pitching advantage in starter Logan Gilbert, who has an ERA of just 0.90 in 10 innings of work, and the Rangers’ bullpen has been simply awful this season, posting a 5.68 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.

Including yesterday’s 6-2 loss to these same Mariners, Texas has now dropped four straight and has been outscored 30-13 during that stretch. With Seattle holding a big edge in the pitching department, this seems like the right time to bet on the home team with -150 odds.

Take the Mariners moneyline versus the Rangers as another best bet for April 20.
