We’re now just under a week into the 2022 MLB season, and every team has at least one win or one loss. This proves that on any given day, any MLB team can pull off a W.
Part of that is because, like the old saying goes, you’re only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher. The starting pitcher can completely change the odds in an MLB game, to the point that most sportsbooks won’t offer action until the pitcher is known, or they’ll cancel your bet if the first pitch is thrown by someone other than the starter listed.
With a full slate of games today, here are the MLB odds, schedule, starting pitchers and predictions for Tuesday, April 12.

MLB Predictions Today and Best Bets
Yesterday’s Parlay of the Day didn’t come to fruition after the Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t get going against the Baltimore Orioles, and the expected slugfest between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees never materialized.
But days where you miss on your best bets do happen. Just remember, over time making the reasoned play will pay off more often than not. With that in mind, here are my predictions and best bets for April 12.
MLB Best Bet April 12: Cleveland Guardians First 5 (-110) vs. Cincinnati Reds, 4:10 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
Shane Bieber is back on the mound for the Guardians today, and whenever their ace is on the hill, the first five innings play is a good bet. And it’s an even better one against the Cincinnati Reds, as Bieber has handled them well in his career. Over the past three seasons, he’s faced his Ohio rivals once per season and each time he has pitched into the eighth inning while holding the Reds to three runs or less.
This would be a strong value play anyway, but the Guardians’ offense has stepped things up in its past two games behind rookie center fielder Steven Kwan. After scoring just one run in their first two games, the Guardians have scored 27 in their past two, and Kwan has led the way going 6-for-8 during that stretch. Bieber usually doesn’t need more than a couple of runs to get the lead through five, so there’s plenty to like here.
MLB Best Bet April 12: Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Over 8.5 (-110), 4:12 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
One thing the Chicago Cubs have consistently done is dominate left-handed pitching. Chicago has played to the over in seven straight road games in which the opponent has sent a lefty to the mound, and the over is 12-3-1 in the Cubs’ past 16 games overall against southpaws.
And Pirates starter Jose Quintana fits that bill. He isn’t exactly one of baseball’s better left-handed pitchers, as he posted a 6.43 ERA in 2021 and didn’t have much success in the National League last season, with a 7.11 ERA in September after the San Fransisco Giants added him for their stretch run. For the Cubs, starter Drew Smyly struggled last April with an 8.05 ERA and had a 4.48 ERA overall last season.
With these two starters on the mound, the over in this game is my best bet for April 12.
MLB Best Bet April 12: Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Under 9 (-110), 9:40 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ bats did virtually nothing against the San Diego Padres in their first series of the 2022 MLB season, hitting just .129 in four games. Yet the D-Backs did manage to plate 11 runs, partly because the Padres issued 19 walks in the series. Without those free passes, the Diamondbacks likely wouldn’t have reached double-digit runs as they only had 15 hits in the four-game series. This tells me that we shouldn’t expect them to put up a large run total today, now facing Houston Astros pitching.
The Astros have issued just seven walks, a .231 batting average, and 10 runs in four games this season. If the Astros’ pitching advantage holds down the Diamondbacks’ lineup and Arizona starter Madison Bumgarner can keep pace — he has a 2.85 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in nine career starts vs. the Astros — then runs should be at a premium on Tuesday night.
