We’re now getting a second look at a bunch of today’s starting pitchers — a group that includes some former Cy Young Award winners — so there’s a bit more information available than what we had on Opening Day. That’s definitely a good thing, as we can now start to piece together a more complete picture to make smarter bets.
Here are the MLB odds, schedule, starting pitchers and predictions for Wednesday, April 13.

MLB Predictions Today and Best Bets
Yesterday marked an overall win for our daily best bets, as the Astros and Diamondbacks played out a pitchers’ duel and the Guardians dominated the first five innings with Shane Bieber on the mound to provide a pair of easy cashes. The first five innings bet on Cleveland was a particularly satisfying play, as getting that kind of value on an ace like Bieber doesn’t happen very often. When a line like that comes around, it’s important to recognize it, so you can hammer it.
With that in mind, here are my best bets for April 13.
MLB Best Bet April 13: Oakland Athletics +1.5 (-135) vs. Tampa Bay Rays, 6:40 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
The Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays have split the first two games of their four-game series with a 13-2 rout by the A’s on Monday and an extra-innings win by the Rays yesterday.
Oakland will send ace Frankie Montas to the mound today looking to bounce back from a rough first outing in Philadelphia in the Athletics’ opener. His numbers weren’t quite as bad as they looked — he gave up five earned runs in five innings, but two of those came after his defense missed a tag on Bryce Harper that would have given Montas two outs and a runner on third instead of one out and two men in scoring position. I’m expecting him to be more like the top-of-the-rotation pitcher he was last season, when the right-hander went 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA.
For the Rays, we get Shane McClanahan, who threw 4.1 shutout innings in his 2022 debut. That was against the lowly Orioles, so we can expect some regression today versus the A’s. Plus, McClanahan did not pitch well against Oakland in two appearances last season. He posted a 5.63 ERA allowing five earned runs in eight innings.
As long as Montas is on his game, look for the A’s to keep this one within a run, if not even pull off the upset victory.
MLB Best Bet April 13: Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees Over 8.5 (-110), 7:05 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
I wasn’t sold on Jose Berrios as Toronto’s ace to start the season, and he did nothing to quell those concerns after failing to make it out of the first inning against Texas in the Blue Jays’ opener. I don’t think he’ll struggle to that extent again, giving up four runs in one-third of an inning, but I do think he will contribute to the over play here. Berrios gave up three runs in four of his final six starts for Toronto in 2021, which means the Yankees’ bats should contribute their share of the necessary runs scored to hit the over.
Gerrit Cole didn’t finish 2021 very strong either, and there is reason for concern about him after he gave up three runs in four innings to the Red Sox on Yankees’ Opening Day. That’s not a terrible performance, but it’s not the kind of numbers you expect from an ace. It also remains to be seen if Cole’s previous success had to do with a bit of help from the “sticky stuff.” He didn’t pitch well against the Jays in two September starts last year, giving up seven earned runs in 9.2 innings.
With both starters’ recent struggles, I’m playing the over 8.5 runs here.
MLB Best Bet April 13: Seattle Mariners (+100) vs. Chicago White Sox, 7:10 p.m. EST, available at BetMGM
Seattle Mariners starter Robbie Ray pitched like an ace against the Twins in his first start of the 2022 season, giving up just three hits and one run in a 2-1 victory. The fact that he had success against Minnesota’s lineup without having to rely on the strikeout (he racked up 248 a year ago, but fanned just five in the opener) shows that he can pick up a win without his best stuff.
The White Sox, meanwhile, throw out back-end starter Dallas Keuchel, who was very inconsistent pitching for Chicago last season. While he held three of his final four opponents to two runs or less in 2021, he also posted a 5.28 ERA on the year.
Taking the pitching matchup into account here, I’ll take Seattle at even money with the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner on the mound.
